In Gmail, you can only recall an email using Undo Send right after sending, within the delay you set (5 to 30 seconds). After that it can’t be recalled.
How it works
Gmail has no true recall. You can only unsend with Undo Send.
Setting it up
- Open Settings, then See all settings.
- Under General, find Undo Send.
- Choose a cancellation period of 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds.
- Save changes.
Using it
After sending, click Undo in the bottom left box. After the delay, the email is delivered and can’t be pulled back.
Other options
Schedule send, or send to yourself first. Outlook’s recall works only inside the same organization.
Time window
By default, Gmail’s Undo Send gives 5 seconds. You can change this to 10, 20 or 30 seconds in Settings, See all settings, General, Undo Send, Send cancellation period.

What it does
Undo Send delays delivery briefly. If you click Undo before the time ends, the message returns to the draft window. After the delay, the email cannot be recalled by the sender.
Limits
Once the message is delivered, you cannot retrieve it from an outside recipient’s inbox. This is different from Microsoft Outlook, where a recall can work only inside the same Exchange organization if the message is still unread.
Mobile apps
On the Gmail app for Android and iPhone, an Undo prompt appears at the bottom after sending. Tap it quickly.

Confidential mode
Gmail’s confidential mode lets you set an expiration date and revoke access to a message later. The recipient sees a link rather than the full message in some cases, and screenshots are still possible. Google Workspace accounts can also use additional features.
Scheduling as a safeguard
Use Schedule send to send an email later, and cancel it any time before delivery from the Scheduled folder.
Habits to avoid errors
- Add the recipient last.
- Reread the message and attachments before sending.
- Use a short undo window of 30 seconds if you often catch mistakes.
If you sent to the wrong person
Send a short follow-up asking the recipient to delete the message. For sensitive data, contact your IT team or security administrator.
Setting the undo window
Gmail’s “Undo Send” is not a true recall. When you click Send, Gmail holds the message for a short delay, and if you click Undo within that time, the message is stopped. The default delay is 5 seconds, and you can set it to 10, 20 or 30 seconds in Settings, See all settings, General, Undo Send, Send cancellation period. After the window closes, the message is delivered and cannot be pulled back from the recipient’s inbox. Choose 30 seconds if you often notice mistakes after sending.

Reducing the risk of mistakes
If a message has already gone to the wrong person, contact them quickly and ask them to delete it unread. Confidential mode, available in Gmail, lets you set an expiry date and require a passcode and blocks forwarding, copying, printing and downloading of the text, but it does not stop screenshots, and the message still reaches the inbox until it expires. Schedule send lets you delay an email by choosing a future time, so you can review and cancel it before it goes. Habits that help are adding the recipient’s address last, checking attachments and using the Reply all button carefully.
