A PS5 that keeps turning off is often overheating, so clean the vents and give it airflow, and also check the power cable and outlet.
Common causes
- Overheating: dust in vents, poor airflow.
- Loose or faulty power cable or outlet.
- Power supply problems.
- Software or corrupt system data.
- Hard drive or SSD errors.
- Safe mode loop.
Fixes
- Place the console in an open, ventilated area.
- Clean vents with compressed air.
- Try a different power cable and outlet.
- Boot in Safe Mode (hold power until second beep) and rebuild the database.
- Update system software.
- Check the HDMI cable and TV settings.
Contact Sony
If the problem continues, the console is under a 1-year warranty.
Safety

Unplug before cleaning.
Common causes
A PS5 that turns itself off or shuts down on its own is usually protecting itself. Common causes are:
- Overheating: blocked vents, dust buildup, placement in a closed cabinet or a hot room. The PS5 shows a warning, and shuts down when internal temperatures get too high.
- Power supply problems: a bad power cable, loose connection, power strip or outlet that does not give stable power.
- HDMI issues: a faulty cable or the HDMI-CEC feature that links TV and console power. The TV may turn off the PS5.
- System software glitch or corrupted data.
- Rest Mode and power settings that turn off the console after inactivity.
- Hard drive or SSD errors or expansion storage problems.
- Hardware failure, such as a faulty power supply unit or a motherboard issue.

Fixes
- Put the PS5 in an open space with at least 4 to 10 inches of clearance around it, and keep vents clear.
- Use compressed air to gently clean dust from the vents with the console off and unplugged.
- Check the power cable at both ends and try another outlet, plugged directly into the wall, not a power strip.
- Turn off HDMI Device Link in Settings > System > HDMI.
- Update the system software and game: Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update.
- Check Settings > Power Saving to adjust the time before the console enters rest mode or turns off.
- Restart in Safe Mode (hold the power button until the second beep) and choose “Rebuild Database.”
- Try another HDMI cable.
- Remove any M.2 SSD expansion to see if the issue stops.
- Back up saves to the cloud or USB, and as a last step, reset the console.
Contact Sony
If the problem continues, contact PlayStation Support. The console has a 1-year limited warranty in the US, with extended options. Do not open the console yourself, as this may void the warranty.
Safety
Keep the console away from carpet, fabrics and heat sources. Do not block the vents. If you smell burning or see smoke, unplug it right away. Do not use damaged power cords.

Overheating and power supply checks
PS5 consoles shut down for protection when internal temperatures get too high, and Sony recommends leaving at least 4 inches (10 cm) of clearance and placing the console in an open, ventilated area. Dust in the vent can block airflow, and gently clean with compressed air or a vacuum on low. The PS5 draws about 200 watts when playing games and uses an internal power supply, so a loose or damaged power cable, a worn outlet or a power strip failure may cause shutdowns. Try plugging the cable directly into a wall outlet. Rebuild the database in Safe Mode by holding the power button until you hear the second beep, then choose “Rebuild Database”, which doesn’t delete data. Update the system software, check that the HDMI connection is secure and that the console isn’t set to rest mode problems. A blinking blue light followed by a white one, or a console that powers off after the white light, may need repair under the one year warranty in the US or extended coverage.
