What the I-94 shows
The record lists your name, date of birth, passport number, country of citizenship, date of arrival, admission class such as B-2 or F-1, and the “Admit Until” date. This date shows how long you may legally stay.
Why it matters
- Employers use it to verify employment authorization.
- Motor vehicle offices use it for a driver license.
- Immigration applications such as a change or extension of status use it.
- It proves lawful presence.
Get it online
The official CBP I-94 website is free for most travelers who arrived by air or sea. You enter name, date of birth, passport number and country of issue. Print or save the record.
Land border arrivals
A paper I-94 may be issued at a land port of entry for a fee, though many land arrivals can also get an electronic record when they entered after a certain date.
If there is an error
- Wrong date, class of admission or spelling can be fixed by a CBP deferred inspection office.
- Bring the passport and the evidence of the correct information.
Lost paper I-94
Form I-102 is used to replace a lost or stolen I-94, with a fee. For a record that exists in the system, you can download it online without a fee.

What the I-94 record contains
The I-94 is the Arrival/Departure Record issued by US Customs and Border Protection to most nonimmigrant visitors, and it shows the date of arrival, class of admission such as B-2, F-1 or H-1B, and the date until which the person is admitted. This date, the “admit until” date, can differ from the visa expiry date. Overstaying the I-94 date can lead to unlawful presence, and 180 days of unlawful presence triggers a 3 year bar on returning, while more than a year triggers a 10 year bar. The I-94 is used to prove legal status when applying for a driver’s license, Social Security number, work authorization or benefits. Canadian citizens entering by land for short visits are generally not issued one.
How to retrieve or correct it
Visitors can retrieve their I-94 for free at i94.cbp.dhs.gov by entering name, birth date, passport number and country of citizenship, and print it from the “Get Most Recent I-94” section. For lost or incorrect records, go to a CBP Deferred Inspection office, or use the I-94 correction request on the CBP site. Replacing a paper I-94 through USCIS requires Form I-102 with a fee. Beware of third party websites charging fees to get your I-94, since the official site is free and its address ends with .gov.
