What Afterpay is
Afterpay is a buy now, pay later service that splits a purchase into four equal payments, one at checkout and three every two weeks, with no interest when payments are made on time. Afterpay is owned by Block, Inc., which also owns Cash App.

Cash App Afterpay
In 2022, Cash App launched Cash App Afterpay, letting Cash App Card users use Afterpay for in-store and online purchases. You need a Cash App account, an Afterpay account and a Cash App Card linked to it.
Setup
- Update the Cash App.
- Look for the Afterpay option on the Cash App Card tab or in the app.
- Link your Afterpay account or create one.
- Use your Cash App Card or Apple Pay or Google Pay for qualified purchases.
Fees
Afterpay does not charge interest. Late fees are charged if payments are missed, up to a cap per order (Afterpay caps late fees at 25% of the order value, with a maximum of 68 dollars per order in the US, as stated in the company terms). Check current terms.
Limits

Spending limits start low (often 100 to 200 dollars) and grow with on-time payments. Afterpay checks eligibility with each purchase and does not use a traditional hard credit check.
Credit effect
Afterpay does not generally report to the major credit bureaus, though policies are changing across the industry. Check current terms.
Pitfalls
Buy now, pay later can lead to overspending, and several open plans can be hard to track. A CFPB report in 2025 noted growth in use among consumers, with concerns about stacking loans.
Returns
Returns are handled by the merchant, and Afterpay adjusts the remaining payment schedule.
Tip
Set payment reminders and only use it for purchases you can afford.
Payment structure and rules
Afterpay lets shoppers split a purchase into four payments, with the first 25 percent due at checkout and the rest every two weeks. There is no interest. Cash App acquired Afterpay’s parent in January 2022 as part of Block, and Cash App Afterpay lets users shop in the app and on partner stores, using the Cash App Card or the Afterpay card in the app. Spending limits start low and can rise with on time payments. Afterpay generally does not run a hard credit inquiry, but it does review your account for repayment history.

Fees and cautions
If a payment is missed, Afterpay charges late fees, and in the US they are capped at a share of the order value, such as up to 25 percent. Missed payments can pause your ability to use the service, and unpaid accounts may be sent to collection. Returns need to be handled with the merchant, and the payment schedule is adjusted when a refund is processed. Buy now pay later can encourage overspending, and the CFPB has noted that some users take on multiple loans at once. Check your due dates in the app and consider turning on autopay from a bank account with enough funds.
